Campbell's Russian Dwarf Hamster

By: Kristen

This is Buttercup the first Campbell's Russian Dwarf that came to live at my house. She is very fat as you can see so be sure that your hamster gets lots of exercise.
My brother thought that Buttercup
was so cute he decided to get one
of his own. Her name is Smores. She is the fastest of them all, if you turn your back she'll be under the couch in an instant eating whatever my brother drops under there.
This is the latest addition to our hamster clan. Her name is Luna and she is about 2 months old. She is an albino. You can tell she is albino because she has pink eyes and a white coat. She sleeps all day because she is always up at night running on her wheel.

Fun Facts:
* Dwarf Hamsters seem to love carrots as a treat in the afternoon.
* They need to sleep half the day undisturbed.
* They are nocturnal.
* There has to be a wheel in the cage at all times because they can run up to 8 miles on it in one night.
* They are always exited to see bedding in their cage like unscented toilet paper.
* They are burrowing animals by nature and therefore love to dig.
* They are very small and quick so be careful not to drop them or they will die.
* They are very territorial so if you get a pair make sure they are littler mates or they will fight and injure themselves, sometimes even die.
* Sometimes even litter mates may have to be separated.
* Do not get a male and female together unless you plan to breed them and know where the pups are going.
* They can have ten babies every month for two years.
* They are cannibalistic about there young, so if you touch the babies or the nest the before their eves open and their fur grows, the mother will feel her babies are in danger and most likely eat them.
* They were first discovered by W.C. Campbell in Tuva, Mongolia in the year 1902.
* They were named in honor of Campbell for discovering them. That’s why they are called Campbell’s Russian Dwarf Hamster.
*They love to eat seed and mine don't seem to enjoy eating the food pellets they seem to like the seeds more than the pellets.*They have very large cheek pouches and when you fill up their food dish they always seem to run over and stuff their cheek pouches full, then go bury the food in a certain spot and run back to their dish to get more.*They come in many varieties of colors.*They are ajusted to live in the terrain of the mountains and enjoy
